Sweet Sugar turns Deadly Explosive
Think sugar is the sweetest thing around? Sugar was cited as the cause of a deadly refinery explosion on february 7, 2008. The blast killed for workers while 20 suffered severe burns. Fire official later attributed minute sugar particles from the refining process as the cause of the explosion. This how sugar dust or dust in general can turn deadly, in an enclosed area that has thick dust inside, set the dust flying through the air and light a match. You’ll see that the particles ignite thier neighboring particles to set off a chain reaction that produces energy.
Given that the particles hang in the air the domino like burning process is greatly enhanced by oxygen. The energy produce in turnresult in compression and expands the volume of air inside the enclosed area, when this build up of energy happens faster than the burning process itself.
